Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I change my filter?
A question I get asked a lot! Short answer is every three to four months under normal conditions. I was always taught that changing your furnace or FAU( forced air unit) filter is like changing the oil in your car. It extends the life of your equipment if you change it regularly.
Long Answer:
There are a lot of variables that could come into play making the need for filter replacement more often:
Unfortunately wild fires have been causing smoke and ash in our surrounding areas. When this occurs you should check your filters every few weeks if not weekly.
Do you have animals? Are they long or short haired? Where is your return located? Floor/low side wall or ceiling/high sidewall?
If you have animals and you have floor/low sidewall returns the animal hair could find its way into the air stream more easily and getting caught in the filter. You should check your filter every two months or earlier if you have numerous pets.
What kind of filter should I buy?
I install MERV (minimum efficiency reporting value) 8 filters for most systems, it’s a preference on what brand. The higher the MERV rating the smaller particles the filter can catch. BEWARE that you make sure your system can handle that amount of filtration as older systems tend to have issues tripping limits with high rated filters.
I suffer from allergies or breathing problems. Can you help?
Indoor Air quality (IAQ) is very important to those who suffer with these issues. More extensive filtration can be added to help in filtering out unwanted pathogens in the air we breathe. Whether it’s bigger filters with higher ratings, electronic filters, UV lights, or air scrubbers, there are a lot of solutions that can be applied to help.
